A CAPTCHA is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to determine whether or not the user is human.

what is captcha and how it is used?

CAPTCHA or Completely Automated Public Turing test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart is a technique to distinguish between humans and computers.
CAPTCHA is mainly used as a security check to ensure only human users can pass through. Generally, computers or bots are not capable of solving a captcha.

WHY THIS TEST?

Many top level hackers assign AI(artificial intelligence) or say robots at task to do malicious hacking. So, in order to preserve the privacy many reputed payment and banking sites especially perform this test to confirm it’s human only because robots can’t read the words written in the captcha.

Why are they called CAPTCHAs?

The term CAPTCHA was first used by computer scientists at Carnegie Mellon University in 2000. CAPTCHA is actually an acronym that stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.” That’s a mouthful.

Advantages and disadvantages of CAPTCHA

Advantages to using CAPTCHAs include:

  • The prevention of spam from automated programs that could send emails, comments or advertisements.
  • The prevention of fake registrations or signups for websites.
  • Most people know what CAPTCHAs are, so visitors to a website will automatically understand what they are tasked to do.
  • CAPTCHAs are also easy to implement in building a website.

Disadvantages to CAPTCHAs include:

  • CAPTCHAs are not foolproof, and can only limit spam.
  • It can be time-consuming or annoying to end-users.
  • To some people, CAPTCHAs may be challenging to read.
  • Websites using CAPTCHAs may notice traffic decrees due to difficulty or annoyance from the end-user.
